Why is it Important to Choose the Right Laser?

All laser hair reduction devices are not the same. Some lasers can be too strong, especially with darker skin types, and result in burning or skin discoloration. Other lasers may require 10 or more treatments to get adequate hair reduction. Some laser devices result in more pain and discomfort than others. Also, there are a lot of factors to consider when determining the best laser and settings to use on an individual. That is why at Revitalize Skin Care & Aesthetics, we use only a certified laser technician to perform laser treatments.

In evaluating the different laser devices available, The GentleMax Pro® is an industry leader in the laser market. It is a single consolidated unit consisting of two very fast and powerful lasers: the Alexandrite and the Nd-YAG. This dual laser system can be customized to achieve excellent hair reduction on all skin types. GentleMax Pro® works by using laser technology to deliver a precise amount of high intensity energy to a targeted area of the skin to safely and effectively destroy hair follicles without harming the surrounding skin. It also employs the use of a Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™), which delivers a cooled air pulse to the skin with each trigger of the laser to significantly decrease discomfort during laser treatments. In fact, many of our clients that have had laser treatments elsewhere report a far more comfortable experience using the GentleMax Pro® compared to other laser devices. Furthermore, many clients treated with the GentleMax Pro laser device have achieved excellent results in as little as 6 to 8 treatments compared to 10 or more treatments with other lasers making it a more economic as well as comfortable choice for laser treatment!

What to Expect with Our Hair Laser Treatments

After reviewing your medical history, our certified laser technician will discuss the specifics of your skin with you and determine the best and safest means of achieving effective hair reduction in the areas of interest. After adjusting the laser device settings, you and your practitioner will put on safety glasses to protect the eyes. Test spots on your skin will then be performed and monitored for a few days to make sure that you respond adequately to treatment and without adverse effects. You will then come in and have the full laser treatment to the designated areas. Effective results using the GentleMax Pro® can generally be achieved with far fewer treatment sessions than with other laser technologies, making it a more convenient and affordable treatment option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments are needed?

Generally, 6-8 treatment sessions are sufficient to provide permanent hair reduction in the majority of patients.  However, the number of treatments can vary depending on individual factors and the growth cycle of the hair. Hair growth occurs in 3 main stages:  Anagen (active hair growth), Catagen (regression), and Telogen (resting and not growing). Laser hair removal affects only the Anagen stage of hair growth. As a result, approximately 20% of residual hair is removed with each laser treatment and 85-90% hair reduction is achieved after 6-8 treatments. Some individuals may need a few more treatments depending on their specific skin, genetics, underlying medical conditions, etc. In any event, after the series of treatments have been completed, an annual maintenance laser treatment is usually required to maintain the effect.

How much do the treatments cost?

Cost varies depending on the area of the body being treated and the condition of the overlying skin. Discounts are available when purchasing a package of laser treatments.

Can freckles turn darker during laser hair removal treatment?

Laser light energy targets pigment in the hair. However, it is possible that if freckles are present in the area being treated, they may also be affected by the laser light as they tend to have more pigment than the surrounding skin. As a result, freckles may initially turn darker and subsequently fade away after a few days.

What precautions should I take after treatment?

After your laser treatment, prevent sun exposure and avoid tanning of the treated area for 7-14 days and apply sunblock (SPF 30 or higher) to the skin when going outside. In the first few days after treatment, do not shave, scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers. Your practitioner may advise additional precautions.

What can I expect after treatment?

In general, laser procedures have a very low risk of adverse side effects. Cool compresses, cold aloe vera, or topical hydrocortisone cream may be applied to soothe the treated skin following your treatment session if desired. Any redness or swelling of the treated skin typically resolves within a few hours. Additional information will be provided during the consultation process and before the treatment is performed after evaluating your specific skin.

How do I prepare for treatment?

Prior to hair removal sessions, patients should avoid plucking, electrolysis or waxing the treatment area for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment. If you have a history of recurrent herpes simplex virus involving the treatment area, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be needed for preventative purposes. Do not expose the intended treatment area to sunlight or tanning-booth light for at least 2 weeks before treatment. The involved skin should be shaved within 1-2 days of treatment and thoroughly cleansed on the morning of treatment. Makeup, creams, oils, topical anesthetics and/or self-tanning products should be removed from the treatment area beforehand.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure utilizing a specific device, which delivers a beam of high-intensity light through the skin to target individual hair follicles. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, thereby inhibiting future hair growth, while sparing the overlying skin. Generally, a series of treatments are required for effective laser hair reduction.

Why should I have laser hair removal instead of the methods I've been using for years?

Laser hair removal is safe and effective. Waxing, shaving and other epilation methods are temporary, time-consuming and can cause irritation, bumps, ingrown hairs and pain. Laser hair removal offers a permanent and significantly more cost-effective treatment solution over the course of an individual’s lifetime.
